Winifred L. Dallas, 90, of Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, February 17, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include her children, William "Bill” Dallas, Jr. of New York, New York and Dee Gibson of Los Altos, California; three grandchildren, Sarah Dallas, Steven Dallas and Christine Gibson; a brother, George Lillie of Hiawatha; and a cousin, Dr. Steven and wife Louise Mowrey of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; and her parents.

Winifred was born May 21, 1914, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of George and Helen (Irwin) Lillie. She attended Coe College, Kirkwood Community College and was a student at the University of Iowa. On July 10, 1948, she married William M. Dallas, a leading and honored Cedar Rapids attorney, who preceded her in death in September of 1981. A 50 year, plus, member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, she spent many years teaching Sunday School, was a member of the Board of Trustees, Pastoral Search Committee from 1985-1987, Prayer Group, Wedding Committee, choir, Bible Student under Mrs. Cyrus Metcalf. Winifred received Honorary Membership in the program of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. for services and contribution to the church and community. She was a Free Lance Writer and was a member and Vice President of the Iowa Poetry Association where she was the recipient of numerous awards for published works. She was selected as Poet of the Year for the 1976 and 1981 and a member of the Academy of American Poets.

Winifred was a member of PTA, Campfire, Experiment in International Living, Boy Scouts, Linn County Chapter of Red Cross Nurse Aide Corps and Elmcrest Country Club. She volunteered at Mercy Medical Center, St. Luke’s Hospitals and the Witwer Center. She was an officer of Linn County Law Wives Association, and was active in Cedar Rapids Community Players.

She was a benefactor of Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Cornell College, Brucemore, Westminster Church, First Presbyterian Church, Shriners and the Seminole Valley Farms.

Winifred was also active against Vietnam War participation.

The family request no flowers be sent. A memorial fund has been established in memory of Winifred.
