Obituary for Eugene W. Winter

Eugene Winter, 72, of 6511 South Avenue SW, died Thursday, November 13, 2008, in his home from a sudden illness. Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include four sisters, Doris Usher, Brighton, Colorado, Ione Burnett, St. Louis, Missouri, Gloria Mason, Mason City, Iowa and Carol (Allen) Stahr of West Union, Iowa; and two brothers, Eldred (Ethel) Winter, Yuma, Arizona, and Marvin (Janet) Winter, Postville, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Eileen Smith; and two brothers-in-law, Lou Burnett and Larry Mason.
Eugene was born April 24, 1936, in El Rosa, Minnesota, the son of Alfred and Olivia (Roelike) Winter. In 1939, he moved with his family to Postville, Iowa, where he attended Postville High School and was a member of the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church. Eugene joined the United States Navy and served for four years. After returning from the service to Postville, he was employed at HyGrade for several years. Eugene then moved to Cedar Rapids, where he was employed at Penick & Ford and later Midland Forge until retiring in 2001.
An active bowler in three leagues, Eugene bowled several 300 games. He was a member of AmVets and the Moose Lodge.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in memory of Eugene % of Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, 520 Wilson Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids.
Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Hanford Post 5.
