Obituary for Dr. George J. Zibilich Sr.,

Dr. George J. Zibilich Sr., 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lone Tree. Burial will be at the Lone Tree Cemetery in Lone Tree with military rites by the combined units of the Cedar Rapids V.F.W. Post 788 and the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457. Following committal services at the cemetery a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion. Visitation for Dr. Zibilich will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2006 from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. rosary at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Memorials may be directed to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lone Tree in memory of Dr. Zibilich. Sympathy notes may be left for the Zibilich family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

George J. Zibilich was born on September 8, 1920 in New Orleans, Louisiana the son of Dominic and Cecile (Kron) Zibilich. George attended college at Loyola of the South at the age of 14 and then graduated from LSU Medical School at the age of 22. On July 4, 1946, George was united in marriage to Gladys Cook in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Zibilich served with the United States Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Dr Zibilich practiced medicine from 1946 - 1949 in New Orleans; 1953 - 1974 in Lone Tree; 1975 - 1976 in Indio, California; 1976 - 1992 in the Mercy Hospital Emergency Department, Mercy Care North and in Tipton, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids and a past member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lone Tree. Dr. Zibilich was also a member of the Cedar Rapids Elks, Cedar Rapids V.F.W. Post 788 and the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, playing cards and board games, watching sporting events and game shows, but most of all, Dr. Zibilich dearly loved to spend time with his family and friends.

Dr. Zibilich will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 59 years, Gladys of Cedar Rapids; one son, George Zibilich, Jr. and his wife, Marilyn, of Eureka, CA; two daughters, Gloria Zibilich-Queen and her husband, Roger, of Smethport, PA and Debbie Yakish and her husband, Rick, of Thornton, CO; seven grandchildren; one brother, Leo Zibilich of Baton Rouge, LA; one sister, Mary Blanco and her husband, Arthur, of New Orleans and one sister-in-law, Berneda Schnoebelen of Lone Tree.

Dr. Zibilich was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Roberta; five brothers, James, Robert, Michael, William and Dominic and one sister, Elizabeth.
