The lighting of a Memorial Candle not only provides a gesture of sympathy and support to the immediate family during their time of need but also provides the gift of extending the Book of Memories for future generations.

Obituary for Elzatie E. Pruitt

On September 9, 1921 a daughter was born to James Monroe Jackson and Jeffie Jones-Jackson in Lima, Oklahoma. They named her Elzatie Elizabeth. Elzatie was one of seventeen children. After graduating from Wagoner High School, where she was an outstanding student and athlete, she relocated to Coweta, Oklahoma and married James Otis Pruitt in 1939. She joined Mt. Rose Baptist Church which remained her church home throughout her life.

She became the proud mother of eight children, Marilyn, Harold, Claude Lewis, Josephine, Barbara Ann, Oliver, Glenal and James Otis Jr.

During her life she worked as a part-time cook at the Green Parrot Café in Coweta for several years and was a Supervisor of Housekeeping at the Bliss Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her home was always open to family and friends.

Her youngest son, James “Rickey”, provided care and support during the last twenty years of her life. Moving her into his home when she could no longer live alone.

Preceding her in death were her husband (Otis) and three children: Claude Lewis, Barbara Ann and Oliver “Mickey” Pruitt; her granddaughter, Sharon “Sherry” Pruitt and grandson, Mark Donovan Pruitt-Childs; her parents; and twelve siblings: Iola Williams, Viola Jackson, Teola Williams, Estelle Pitts, Hester James, Gertrude Jackson, Rose Simmons, Augusta Jackson, Howard Jackson, Harrison Ballard, Freddie Mae Harris, and Adell Clayton.

Elzatie leaves to cherish her memory three daughters and two sons: Marilyn (Jessie) Pearson, Josephine Pruitt-Thompson, and Glenal Pruitt-Johnson of Redwood City, California; Harold (Ruth) Pruitt of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and James Otis Pruitt Jr. of Coweta, Oklahoma. Siblings: Ollie Mae Williams of Coweta, Oklahoma, Odell Neal of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Luddie Jackson of Fresno, California and James Monroe Jackson, Jr. of Seattle, Washington: brother-in-law, Tommy Harris of Coweta, Oklahoma; a host of nieces and nephews; and a legacy of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Elzatie's Life will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Mt. Rose Baptist Church in Coweta, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Jackson Grove Cemetery in Coweta, Oklahoma.
