Obituary for Daniel Lafayette "Pawpaw" Dowdy

Daniel Lafayette "Pawpaw"  Dowdy
Pawpaw Daniel Lafayette Dowdy, age 77, Rome, passed away Sunday afternoon at his residence.

He was born in Talladega County, Alabama on July 9, 1934, son of the late Daniel Harris Dowdy and the late Lucille Hendrix Dowdy. He was employed for several years in the pulpwood business and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dowdy was preceded in death by a son, Alvis Dowdy; by 3 sisters, Barbara Ashley, Nora Lee Self, and Stacey Womack, and by 2 granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife, the former Imogene Proctor, to whom he was married on February 15, 1964; 3 daughters, Carol Dowdy, Olla, LA, Mary Joe Akins, Rome, and Gayle Akins, and her husband, Gary, Rome; 3 sons, David Dowdy, and his wife, Elizabeth, Rome, Mickey Dowdy, and his wife, Stephanie, Lindale, and Michael Dowdy, and his wife, Genia, Rome; 2 brothers, George Dowdy, Rome, and Dewey Dowdy, Rome; a sister, Shirley McGraw, Rome; 22 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2012, at 2pm at the Liberty Way Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Boatner and the Rev. Vance Stiles officiating. Interment will follow in the Sanders Cemetery in Polk County.

Mr. Dowdy will be taken to the residence of a son, David Dowdy, 4691 Blacks Bluff Road, Rome, where the family will receive friends from 2pm on Tuesday until time to depart to the church for the service.

Active pallbearers are asked to meet at the residence on Thursday at 1pm and include; Mikey Dowdy, Joey Lewis, Brandon Akins, Adam Griffin, Lee Lowery and Damon Soles. Honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at the church on Thursday at 1:30pm and include; John Wayne Dennis and Rickey Garrett.

Henderson & Sons Funeral Home has charge of the funeral arrangements.
