William Falls Culp

William Falls “Rusty” Culp, 87, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017. Rusty was born March 26, 1930, to John L. Culp and Josephine Ball Culp in Throckmorton, Texas. He was raised on the Long X Ranch in Kent, Texas. August 1948, he joined the United States Marine Corp for one year. On August 1950, he reenlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp and was in Korea for 15 months. On February 22, 1953, he was married to Doris Westfall Covington. In 1954 was discharged from the Marine Corp and returned to West Texas and worked on a ranch and in the oilfield. A short time after that he moved to Barnhart then to Laney, N.M. to work on the Rocker b Ranch which was San Cristabol Ranch. On March 11, 1967, he began working for the Rocker b Ranch in Barnhart, TX. Later he became the ranch manager and retired in October 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and then his wife Doris on June 7, 1985. On July 3, 1993, Rusty married Shirley Prosise Shrum. They moved to their new home the first of October 2000. Rusty’s hobbies were golf, woodwork and working in the yard. He loved to play games on his computer, watch his favorite show “The Wheel of Fortune and he loved to rope. (Age stopped that) There was nothing that he could recall that he disliked doing on the ranch. Rusty was a very kind and considerate person. He was constantly doing things for other people. He was very good with children, old people and those with a handicap. I always considered him as my God Sent. Rusty is survived by his wife Shirley, two sons: Jim Covington & wife Sue of New Braunfels, Texas; Frank Culp & wife Barbara of Port Aransas, Texas, two step children: Gary Shrum and wife Rhonda of San Angelo, Cindy Copeland and husband Craig of Abilene. He has 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Also, several nieces and nephews. He was a member of the Cowboy Methodist Church in Barnhart. He joined the Masonic Lodge #1203 in Big Lake, Texas, March 1956. Was Master of the Lodge from 1976 thru 1978. And Master of Mertzon Lodge and Master of Paint Rock Lodge. Also, was a Member of Scottish Rite Dallas Bodies and dual member with Waco Scottish Rite Bodies. Past President Tri-County S.R. Club, president of Concho S.R. Club, KCCH 32 degree 1995, Shrine 1997, Director-President golf unit, Past president Greeters Unit, York Rite 1997, York Rite College 1998, Order of the Purple Cross, York Rite 2014 and many more awards. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Shaffer Funeral Home’s Sherwood Way Chapel. Family graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Sunday morning at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Ozona. Grandsons and the Masons will be honorary pallbearers. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way.
