George Townsend Obituary

George Buchanan Townsend, 80, was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 9, 2017. Born September 18, 1936, he was the son of George & Elizabeth Mather (Kelso) Townsend of Cleveland, Ohio. As a young boy his family moved to California. George graduated from John Brown University in Arkansas with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. While at JBU, he met his first love Norma Reath Mahan, and they were married on September 5, 1958 in Greeley, Colorado. George and Norma lived in Pasadena, California for several months after they were married, but moved back to Greeley just before their first of four daughters was born in August 1959. George owned Lustre Craft of Colorado where he sold waterless cookware, china, and crystal. He excelled in salesmanship. He and Norma enjoyed many sales award trips to Europe, Israel, Hawaii and the Caribbean. He especially loved visiting Scotland because of his Scottish heritage. George had a love for airplanes. He and Norma were originally planning to serve with Missionary Aviation Fellowship, but were prevented because of his allergies and asthma. He and two partners started Aero West Flying Club (now known as Blue Sky Flyers) in Greeley, Colorado where they owned and flew many small private single and multi-engine airplanes. George’s greatest enjoyment was music. He grew up playing the trumpet. He directed choirs and participated in many quartets both in college and at church. George attended First Evangelical Free Church and Mountain View Evangelical Free Church in Greeley. He also served as a Sunday School teacher, on the church board, as a deacon and an elder. George was the founder of S.N.I.G (Sunday Nights in Greeley) and F.I.T.S (Friday in the Springs). SNIG and FITS were non-profit organizations created to provide high quality Christian entertainment to the local community that most local churches could not afford to provide. Over the years thousands of people enjoyed these free concerts in the Greeley and Colorado Springs communities. George and Norma were married for 49 1/2 years when she preceded him in death on March 26, 2008. On May 30, 2010, he married Doris Elaine (Perry) Marner. Humor & music filled their seven years together. George is survived by his four daughters from his first wife; Carrie & John Simpson, Connie & Rick Ediger, Cheryl & David Endres, and Cindi & Jim Franklin. Grandchildren; Nathan Simpson, Heidi Olson, Sarah Barstad, Hannah Simpson, Josiah Gertge, Caleb Ediger, Aubree Ediger, Cherise Endres, Ryan Endres, Cejae Sanchez, Marco Sanchez, Amanda Evans, Garrett Sanchez, Levi Franklin and ten great-grandchildren. George is also survived by his wife, Doris Townsend and his step-children, Mike & Christy Marner, Jason & Tracy Marner, Janell & Mauricio Aparicio. Step-grandchildren; Kevin Guy, Ryan Marner, Emily Marner, Daniel Banks, Caitlyn Marner, Ariel Aparicio, Gabriel Aparicio and one step great-granddaughter. Visitation 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2017 and 9:30a.m to 10:30a.m. Thursday, June 15, 2017 both at Adamson. Graveside Service 11:00 a.m. Thursday, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
