Obituary for David Jelden

David  Jelden
David Jelden, 80, of Greeley passed away September 30, 2011 at the NCMC Hospice Inpatient Unit. He was born October 8, 1930 in Columbus, NE to Edward John and Vera (Cates) Jelden.
David married Rose Marie Hibberd on September 7, 1952 in Lexington, NE.

He lived in St. Cloud, MN, Lexington and Gibbon, NE before moving to Greeley in 1962.

He was a graduate of Columbus High School, received his BA at Kearney State Teachers College, Masters from Colorado State College and his Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Columbia. David taught industrial arts at Gibbon High School for 3 years, Lexington High School for 2 years, St. Cloud State College for 2 years and then at UNC before the program was replaced with Ed. Tech. In 1988 he became the supervisor of the Phoenix main frame testing facility.

David was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, church board chairman and past chairman to campus ministry. He joined the Greeley Noon Lions Club in 1962 and drove their fire engine in the Fourth of July parade for 49 years. He also played golf with the Senior Men’s Golf Association and served on their board. David was a recipient of the M. Lucille Harrison award for outstanding teaching at UNC in 1974, served as Department Chair at UNC, recipient of the Outstanding Leadership and Service Award in 1978, the national Teacher Educator of the Year in 1981, and was a presenter at the International Conference in Baden-Baden, West Germany in 1984.
David was a member of the American Industrial Arts Association, was a Cubmaster, served on the Policy Review Board at NCMC as well as the Hospice Board.

He enjoyed woodworking and golfing, but most enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include his wife, Rosie Jelden of Greeley; sons, Steven Jelden of Arvada; Dennis (Linda) Jelden of Holyoke and Kevin (Konnie) Jelden of Greeley; grandchildren, Anna and Emily Jelden of Holyoke and Kolten, Kaelie and Karli Jelden of Greeley.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers.

Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 7 at the First United Methodist Church.
