Memorials may be made to the John and Janie Shell Memorial Scholarship Fund at Hastings College, NE or to Hospice and Palliative Care in care of Allnutt May Chapel, 702 13th Street, Greeley, CO 80631.Theodore Murray Nelson, 81, of Greeley, CO, passed away Monday, July 24, 2006 at Fairacres Manor. Services were held Saturday, July 29, 2006 in Minnesota with interment at the Scandinavian Cemetery, Forest Lake, MN.Ted was born August 21, 1924 in Erskine, MN to Theodore and Nana (Amundson) Nelson. He married Dona Mae Holter in Valley City, ND on July 11, 1952, and she passed away in 1981 after a long illness.He graduated from North Branch High School in North Branch, MN, and served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota, and his first teaching job was in Fort Lake, MN. Ted earned his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1961. He accepted a position at the Counseling and Test Center at Colorado State College in 1962 and moved his family to Greeley in a cattle truck. His first office was in Cranford Hall. While at UNC he served as Dean of Students, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Special Assistant to the President. During his tenure at UNC, he was instrumental in creating the Emotional Crisis Workshop. He served on the Board of Weld Mental Health, the Harmony Foundation and was a member of the First Congregational Church.He married Leabeth Barnard in 1984. They later divorced.Ted was proud of his Norwegian heritage and took his daughters to Norway in 2000.He is survived by his daughters, Shan and her husband, Richard Craven of Greeley, CO, Thea Nelson of Vinalhaven, ME and Maja and her husband, Robert Kotmel, of Burlingame, CA; and grandchildren, Rory Craven of Boston, MA, Riley and Shea Craven of Greeley, Samantha and Jessica Kotmel of Burlingame, CA.Ted was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother, Eugene "Fritz" Nelson.Memorials may be made to the Weld County Humane Society or Meals on Wheels in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 702 13th Street, Greeley, CO 80631.
