Edward L.  Gillette
Dr. Edward L. Gillette, 74, of Fort Collins, passed away November 17, 2006. He passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones following a 10 year battle with cancer. A memorial serive will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 28, m 2006 at Allnutt Drake Road Chapel.Dr. Gillette was born May 21, 1932 to Harold and Laura Gillette in Coffeyville, Kansas. He graduated from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1956 and subsequently served in the Army Veterinary Corp. He attended graduate school at Colorado State University and received a Master's degree in Radiology and a Ph.D in Physiology and Radiation Biology. He was a faculty member in the Department of Radiological Health Sciences at CSU for over 40 years. He was a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Radiology (Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation oncology) and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology). Dr. Gillette developed and directed the Comparative Oncology Unit at Colorado State University, publishing over 100 scientific papers and generating over 20 million dollars in research funding. He was the Chairman of the Department of Radiological Health Sciences from 1989-1998 and served as Associate Dean of Research in the College of Veterinary Medicine and biomedical sciences from 1997-1998. He received numerous awards including the American Animal Hospital Association Outstanding Service Award, the Ralston Purina Small Animal Research Award, and the Kansas State University Distinguished Alumnus Medallion Award. He was also a CSU honor alumnus. Of his professional accomplishments, Dr. Gillette was most proud of his numerous graduate students who have gone on to succeed in research and in veterinary medicine. For the last 10 years he lived with his wife Sharon Gillette on their small farm in northern Fort Collins where he enjoyed raising and racing horses. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of Eaton Country Club. He was an avid fan of the CSU athletic programs and the Denver Broncos. He was a charter member and past president of the Fort Collins Breakfast Rotary Club, where he enjoyed community service and many friends.He is survived by his wife, Sharon McChesney Gillette, his sister, Laurine Patterson of Ludlow Falls, Ohio, brothers Robert Gillette of Great Bend, Kansas, John Gillette of Fairfield Bay Arkansas, and Richard Gillette of Grapevine, Texas. He is also survived by his children William Gillette of Arvada, Jeffrey and Timothy Gillette of Fort Collins and Jennifer Gillette of Golden, and their mother, Carol Gillette of Fort Collins. He is also survived by 7 beloved grandchildren: Joseph, Erin, Heather, Lindsey, Steven, Thomas and Ian.
