Dora A. Bedford
Of Frankfort, 99, died peacefully Feb 3, 2011 at the Frankfort Pines Assisted Living facility. Dora was born Aug. 27 1911 the first child of Alvin "Ollie" and Hazel ( Harmon) Bedford. Her grandfather, Edwin Bedford, was a long time Captain of the life saving station at Point Betsie, as was her great uncle, Harrison "Tip" Miller. Her mothers' father A.B. Harmon operated the Harmon Grocery, located in the present Olsen-Sayles Gift Shop. Ollie, as a young man, delivered groceries for the Harmon grocery and eventually married the grocer's daughter. Dora attended the Frankfort Schools until 1925 when the family moved to Ann Arbor. In Ann Arbor, Ollie worked for the Ann Arbor Railroad. Dora attended Ann Arbor High School., the University of Michigan and Cleary College.
Dora was employed by the State of Michigan Department of Health in Lansing and the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor. She also worked at the Ford Bomber, B-24 plant during World War II. After 30 years at the University of Michigan, Dora retired in 1973 from the office of the Vice-President for Business Affairs and returned to live in Frankfort with her father. Together they enjoyed planting tree and gardening on the family farm. For many years, in her retirement, Dora toured the Western United States and Canada in her travel home, wintering in Mesa, Az. Dora was a member of Frankfort United Methodist Church and was one of the first residents of Michigan Shores Cooperative in Frankfort. She enjoyed hiking, reading and crafting. She entered her colorful weavings in many juried art fairs.
Dora was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William H. Bedford. Surviving are brothers, Robert E. of Memphis and John R. of Artesia, California and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at the Frankfort United Methodist Church in the late spring. Contributions may be made to Benzie Animal Welfare League, Benzie Shores District Library or Frankfort United Methodist Church.
