Obituary for Melvin Leon Grayson

Melvin Leon “Doot” Grayson, 84, of Evansville passed away on April 8, 2010 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital. Melvin was born on January 16, 1926 in Sacul, Texas to Maurine and Walter Grayson. He served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years and had been a Merchant Marine. Melvin received a Purple Heart medal for wounds received in action on May 20, 1945. He was a Fireman Second Class in the U.S. Naval Reserve at the time.
Melvin had been an over the road truck driver for 20 years while living in the Houston, Texas area. He had lived in the Evansville area with his wife, Patricia, for 14 years. Melvin had been an avid fisherman and loved cooking.
Survivors include his loving wife, Patricia Grayson, of Evansville; sons, Roger and Randy Grayson; daughters, Carol (Joseph) Cook and Wanda Minton; grandchildren, Melissa Cook and Michael Cook; brother, Gerald Grayson; sister, Gloria Coulter; sisters-in-law, Mae Raymond and Darlene Perry; and dear friends, JD and Hazel Farrill.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and by his son, Reggie Grayson.
Funeral services will be held with full military rites on Wednesday, April 14 at 1:00 pm at Sunset Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm on Tuesday and from 10:00 am until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
