Obituary for Edwin David Beem

HORNICK, Iowa -- Edwin David Beem, 86, of Hornick died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holly Springs (Iowa) Bible Fellowship Church, with the Rev. Jim Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Westfork Township Cemetery, Climbing Hill, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of McCulloch Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Moville, Iowa.

Edwin was born Dec. 27, 1922, on the family farm in the Holly Springs area, the son of Lee and Anna Marie (Larsen) Beem. He was raised in Holly Springs and graduated from Holly Springs High School in 1940. He graduated from an aviation tech school in Omaha. He worked for Glenn L Martin Aviation in Baltimore, Md. in research and development. He returned to Omaha, when Glenn L. Martin's started building the B-26 Martin Marauder. In 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy Air Corps and served until 1946.

On June 3, 1944, he married Alma A. Owen in Omaha. The couple lived in Oklahoma, Missouri and California during the war. They returned to Hornick after the war, where he started farming.

He was a member of the Holly Springs Bible Fellowship Church and the American Legion Hindman-Steele Post 492 of Hornick. He was a past president of the Woodbury County Beef Producers Association and had served as a member of the Woodbury Central School Board. In 1959 the Iowa State Plowing Match was held on his farm in Hornick.

He is survived by his five children, Charles and Toni of Indianapolis, Ind., Danny and Kathy of Phoenix, Ariz., Sam and Theresa of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Linda and George Bolton of Melbourne Beach, Fla., and John and Peggy of Villisca, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Angela Moe, Daniel Beem, Shannon Ables, Wendy Higgins, Amy Chow, Jacob Beem, Michael Bolton, David Bolton, Katie Babb, Lindsey Beem, Ashley Alma Beem and Johnny Beem; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and brothers and sisters, Earnest, Clarence, Arthur, Marie, Elda and Dewitt.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
