My Cousin Sammy

Cousin Sammy was the oldest of us Noble grandchildren. I have many good memories of him from when we were kids together in Sterlington -- stories of china berry wars, fishing, baseball, fishing, learning about Jesus, and fishing. Sammy seemed happiest earlier in life but then life dealt Sammy several bad breaks among them the death of an infant son. Afterward, he found the Apostolic church and told me once that was where he had all his fun. I hope so because I rarely saw him after that and on those few occasions when I did see him afterward he didn't seem the same or as happy. I choose to remember Sammy as I once saw him in our grandfather's backyard. Uncle Jerry, his dad and little league coach, raising his bat and hitting a high fly ball to what, if on a baseball diamond, would be about left center field; Sammy starting from around what, if on a baseball diamond, might be the pitcher's mound, taking off after, getting under it, diving for the ball, disappearing in a huge cloud of dust...and as the light summer breeze clears the cloud, Sammy standing with his hand and the ball in the air.
