Nellie Katherine Nester Carter, 82 of Thaxton, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at her residence. She was born on Thursday, January 8, 1931 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Sidney Albert Nester and Eula Gertrude Creasy Nester. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ira Burton Carter, a son, Paul Albert Carter, four brothers, Ray, Wayne, Bill & James Edward Nester and a sister, Peggy Goff. She was a retired from Woodhaven Nursing Home as a Nurses Aide and Cook. Surviving are her sons, Calvin Burton Carter, Marvin Lee Carter & wife, Patricia all of Thaxton; her daughters, Mary Jane Wilson & husband, Roger of Moneta, Nellie Louise Whorley & husband, Bo, Rachel Ann Bresett & husband, Thomas all of Thaxton; six grandchildren, Kathy, Wayne, Kevin, Justin, Courtney & Katelyn; four great-grandchildren, Bethany, Kayley, Jaidon & Colton, four sisters, Gladys Dooley of Bedford, Betty Goff of Big Island, Shirley Nichols of Salem, Nancy Carter of Bedford & and a special friend, Peggy Carter Nester. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 20, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford with Rev. Larry Myers officiating. Interment will follow in Cool Springs Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday after 12 noon and the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
