Serving Others to the Very End

When Kent joined the Standardized Patient program at the Texas A&M Health Science Center last spring, he told me that he was battling cancer and that he just wanted to do what he could to help our students for as long as he could. Kent played many roles for students over the next 9 months, providing them a safe environment to practice their skills. You would think that a terminal patient would not want to spend any more of their final days in a hospital bed or medical environment than were absolutely necessary – but not Kent; he volunteered for every case for which he matched the profile, and sometimes spent entire days in a hospital bed happily helping students learn how to care for their patients. Kent was a favorite of students, faculty, and staff. He always provided a realistic performance with enthusiasm and attention to detail, and he was graciously flexible when things changed at the last minute. He will by sorely missed at the Clinical Learning Resource Center (simulation center) by all.
