Obituary for Phoebe Cary Ryan Schubert

Phoebe Cary (Ryan) Schubert, 90, a resident of the Village at Heritage Point in Morgantown, passed away Monday, October 31, 2011, after an extended hospitalization following a fall which occurred during a fire drill. Phoebe was born at home in Ryan, WV on January 11, 1921 the daughter of the late Daniel Smith and Mabel May (Hunt) Ryan. As a child, she attended various rural schools in Roane County, WV where her father taught and was graduated from Walton High School in 1938. She received her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from West Virginia University in 1947 and a Master of Arts in Library Science in 1967. She was involved with her husband, Oscar, in the founding of the WVU Chapters of Gamma Sigma Delta and Phi Kappa Phi. She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who put her family first. Phoebe loved fishing, the outdoors, quilting, gardening, and reading and was an avid history buff with a special interest in Appalachian history and genealogy. She especially enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband around West Virginia, the United States, and Europe. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Oscar E. Schubert children, Gary E. and wife Alice of Philippi, WV, Dr. Karel R. of Morgantown, WV, and Rudy P. and wife Kay of College Station, TX grandchildren, Bryan E. Schubert of Kandahar, Afghanistan, Rachel R. and husband Nate Coraor of State College, PA, Kristi K. Schubert of Coppers Cove, TX, Lt. Paul E. Schubert, U.S. Air Force stationed in San Angelo, TX, Ryan F. Schubert of Philippi and Megan W. Schubert of Kansas City, MO great-granddaughter, Sofia Ryan Coraor sisters Mary Alice Sands of Loveland, CO, Lucy Charlotte Anderson, of Tampa, FL and Martha Shock of Albuquerque, NM along with many relatives. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Leo Gilbert Schubert a sister Helen May Cook, and a brother John Edward Ryan. Family and friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, Saturday, Nov. 5 from 12:00 (Noon) until the time of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Tim Halloran. Burial will follow at the Forks of Cheat Cemetery.
