Obituary for Mae Garnett Young

Mae Garnett Young
Mae Young, 104, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 23, at the D'Youville Pavillion with her loving family at her side.

Mae was born in Augusta on May 14, 1908, the daughter of James and Betty (Capstick) Garnett of England. She married the late Bernard T. Young in Dover, NH on her 19th birthday. She joins him, now, 58 years after his passing.

Mae was a homemaker until her husband's untimely death, at which time she began a 28 year career at the Bates College Den and cafeteria, where she cheerfully served students whom she treasured dearly.

She was beloved by her nurses, caretakers, and peers at D'Youville, where she stayed active in her later years by making crafts, playing bingo, and sharing stories about her days at Bates and raising her children.

Mae had two children of her own, Herbert A. Young and the late Arthur B. Young, as well as two nephews she helped raise, Frank Young and the late Charles Young.

A gentle, patient woman with a generous heart and loving sense of humor, Mae is remembered by her family for her endless compassion, countless stories told over tea and cookies, and unforgettable peanut butter fudge. She loved cooking, collecting coins, sewing, crocheting, and other crafts, hobbies which she shared with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her family feels blessed that she lived long enough to see her 16 great-grandchildren grow up and to meet her first great-great-granddaughter, Lydia Mae Breau of Sabattus.

Mae leaves her son, Herbert A. Young, and his wife Charlotte, of Sanford; her daughter-in-law, Constance Young, of Poland; her nephew Frank Young and his wife, Marie, of Wilton; her grandchildren Arthur Young and his wife, Denise, of Hooksett, NH, Elaine Breau of Lewiston, Thomas Young of Burlington, NC, Susan Mitchell and her husband, James, of Sanford, Jill Olson of Poland, Allan Young and his wife, Sue, of Sanford, Linda Young-Cormier of Auburn, Donna Young of Auburn, and Heidi Matthews of Tuscon, AZ; her 14 great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; and her great-great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard, her son Arthur, her nephew Charles, and her great-grandson Andrew.

Mae's family also thanks Mae's friends Nancy Tardif, George “Frenchy” Ouellette, and Lucien Champagne, as well as the caring staff at D'Youville Pavillion, for all their love and support.
