Obituary for James Robert Hollis

James Robert Hollis, Senior passed away at his home on Friday, April 27, 2012 after a lengthy illness. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Church Street United Methodist Church in Selma. Visitation with the family will be held after the service in Windham Hall of the church.

Mr. Hollis was born on January 31, 1931 in Troy, Alabama to Thelma Lowman Hollis and Joe Moxley Hollis. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Joe Frost Hollis and his wife of 38 years Loyce Springer Hollis. He is survived by his wife, Myrna Todd Hollis; daughter Melissa Hollis Milligan (Mike) of Selma; son J. Robert Hollis, Jr. (Shirley) of Montgomery; stepchildren Sandra Todd Clay (David) of Auburn and Steve Todd (Rachel) of Selma. Grandchildren Robin Hollis Robbs (Thomas) of Santa Claus, IN and Clayton Hollis of Auburn, Allen and Mary Elizabeth Todd of Selma, and Todd Clay of Auburn. Great-grandaughter Sarah Claire Robbs of Santa Claus, IN. He is also survived by brothers Morris (Betty) Hollis of Jackson’s Gap, Jerry (Patsy) Hollis of Jackson’s Gap, twin brother Billy Hollis of Signal Mountain, TN. Sister Mary Edna Hollis Foster of Mobile, AL.

Mr. Hollis received his Bachelor of Science in Business Education from Troy University and his Master’s from the University of Alabama. He was a career educator having taught Vocational Education at Parrish High School and later serving in the Alabama State Department of Education as Assistant Superintendent of Vocational Education. Bob retired in 1991 with over 35 years of service to the children of Alabama.

Bob was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and a former member and deacon of Fairview Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army from 1951 through 1953.

Prior to his illness Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. Bob also enjoyed traveling domestically and abroad with Loyce and their children and later with Myrna. Bob’s greatest pleasure was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers will be Catesby Jones, Landis McMillon, Elmer Hill, Chuck Speir, Harold Hill, Joyce Smith and members of the Mary Sweeny Sunday School class.

Pallbearers will be Charles Pollack, Rex Waldrop, Mike Milligan, Steve Todd, David Clay, Bill Lightfoot, Tad Lightfoot and Clayton Hollis.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Church Street United Methodist, 214 Church St. Selma, AL or to ones favorite charity.
