MARTELL, Richard Alexander – (1934 – 2012). It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather on Friday, February 17, 2012 at Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton. Born in Woodstock, NB “Dick” was the son of the late Edward and Marion (Dunbar) Martell. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Diane Joy (Dumais), his daughters Joanne (Peter Spicer), Torbrook NS; Janice (David Hatfield) Kingston NS; Dawn (Rick Bushell), Kingston NS and son Rick (Rona) Martell, Toronto, ON. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Evan Hatfield, Danielle, Brandon and Katie Bushell. He is also survived by his brother Andrew (Jean) Martell, Fredericton, NB and his sister Mary (Chris) Loomer, Halifax, NS. Dick joined the RCAF in 1954 and spent 30 years serving in a variety of assignments including Radio Officer on 405 Squadron, Navigator, and Base Exchange Officer in Goose Bay Labrador, Marville France, Lahr Germany, Ottawa and Greenwood NS. In his younger years he was an avid tennis and hockey player and then golf and curling became his pastime. He loved to play and watch all sports and usually cheered for the underdog. After retiring in Middleton in 1984, Dick became a lifetime volunteer for different organizations namely the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1, Middleton NS where he worked tirelessly gathering information from local Veterans to be included in the Veterans’ Service Recognition Booklet; he made numerous visits to the local hospital Veteran’s Wing and also served as Treasurer and President. He was also on the Audit Committee for the Annapolis Valley Credit Union for several years. Dick will be fondly remembered for his dry sense of humour which he shared with strangers and friends alike. He loved teasing the local bank tellers and generally talking to store clerks and anyone who would listen. He was a loyal friend, loving father and husband and a very generous and soft hearted individual. He was a tissue donor, helping to improve the quality of lives for others. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1 in Middleton.
