Obituary for Edward C. Rivers

Edward C. "Ed" Rivers, 77, of 57 Montgomery St., Ilion, formerly of Putts Hill Road, Mohawk, Prospect Street, Herkimer and Prindle Apartments, Ilion, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 9, at St. Luke's-Memorial Hospital, New Hartford. He was born Dec. 15, 1927, in Syracuse, the son of Kenneth and Pansy (Gokey) Rivers. Educated in Utica, he enlisted in the United States Army on Oct. 29, 1945, serving in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 19, 1947, receiving the Victory and Occupation medals. He was a member of the Herkimer VFW and Mohawk and Ilion American Legions. On Aug. 31, 1957, he married Evelyn Marcewicz in Mohawk. She predeceased him on Aug. 25, 2000. Ed enjoyed life to the fullest. No matter what hardships life brought him, he always had a smile. He was loved by everyone who knew him. He especially enjoyed the daycare program and staff at Mohawk Valley Nursing Home. He was known as "Mr. Ed" to the children who visited daycare. He was an avid Braves fan and loved collecting owls. Ed was a wonderful father and grandfather who will be truly missed by everyone, especially his loving family. Survivors include his daughter and future son-in-law, Naomi Loiacono and Jay Warner, with whom he resided; his son and daughter-in-law, Vincent and Freda Rivers of Jacksonville, N.C.; five cherished grandchildren, Vincent Jr. and wife Frances Rivers, Ruth and Timothy Rivers and Emily Loiacono; great-granddaughter, Felicia Rivers; his brother and sister-in-law, Harley and Helen Rivers of Liverpool; his sister, Helen Hewitt of St. Regis Falls; his brother-in-law, Richard Marcewicz; his sister-in-law and husband, Mary and Richard Fehrman; his very special friend, Jean; several nieces, nephews and cousins and two special faithful dogs, Toby and Rusty. Family and friends are invited to visitation on Thursday, Jan. 13, from 10-11 a.m. at the Applegate and Day Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion. Ed's funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. following visitation at the Applegate and Day Funeral Home. Interment with full military honors will follow in Mohawk Cemetery. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Jennifer at the daycare program, Herkimer County Public Health Nursing, especially Carmen and Judy, and Dad's doctor and the staff at Faxton-St. Luke's ICU, especially Brad, "Christmas" Carol and Loretta. Memorial contributions may be made to Herkimer County Public Health Nursing or the American Cancer Society. Donation envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
