Edwin J.  Harris
ILION - Edwin “Ed” J. Harris, age 88, formerly of 140 Manhattan Ave., Ilion, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Mohawk Valley Nursing Home where he had recently resided. He was born on May 15, 1920, in Coventry, N.Y., the son of Jerry and Lena (McGowan) Harris. Ed was a veteran of W.W. II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater. At one time he was married to Laura Bahr. Mr. Harris later married Esther Humphrey who died in December of 1984. Most recently he was married to Evelyn Foster who died in 2002. Ed owned and operated Ed’s Transmission Service in Frankfort. He later worked as a mechanic at Midtown Pontiac, Ilion. Mr. Harris retired as custodian of Ilion High School. After retirement, Ed took care of disabled and handicapped people in his home for many years. Survivors include his children, Janet Evans and husband Dennis of Clay, N.Y., Gerald Harris and wife Jan, Ken Harris, Anthony Scott Harris and wife Melissa, all of Ilion; several step-children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Margaret Gilbert of Colorado; his brother, Joseph Harris of Kentucky; several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friend, Doris Newly of Rome. He was predeceased by his brothers, Donald, Glenn, Ralph, Fred Harris; his sister, Katherine DeVito. Funeral services will be held 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 209, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 102 West St., Ilion, with Ed’s son, The Rev. Gerald Harris, pastor of the Living Hope Church of the Nazarene of Westmoreland, offciating. Spring interment will be in Mt. View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls. Calling hours are Wednesday, 3-5 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers and as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Assoc. of CNY. Envelopes are available at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, Ilion.
