Mr. John D. Godwin, 80 of Florence passed away Friday, February 3, 2012 at E.C.M. Hospital. John was a member of Woodmont Baptist Church and a USAF veteran of the Korean War.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 7, 2012 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at Woodmont Baptist Church in the chapel with service to follow at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park. Officiating will be Jerry Rea.
John was born in Birmingham, AL. He retired from BellSouth as a supervisor in 1985 after 35 years of dedicated service. He was transferred by the telephone Company in 1973 to Florence, AL. where he had made his home since that time. During these years in Florence, he served in his church in many ways, taking mission trips with the youth of the church and several trips with the men to work with other churches in their building programs.
Mr. Godwin is survived by his wife, Betty C. Godwin; son, John Randall Godwin of Killen, presently serving in Afghanistan; daughter, Karen G. King, of Florence; and son, Jeffery Alan Godwin of Florence. His grandchildren are Joshua Webster Godwin of Baton Rouge, LA., Jeremy Shane King of Roswell, GA., Justin Wayde King of Florence, Austin Mason Godwin and Stephanie Lauren Godwin of Birmingham. He leaves behind his brother, Charles Richard Godwin and wife Helen of Blufton, S.C. and sister, Dianne Beard of Georgia and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Randolph Godwin and Mary Ellen Forester; and his beloved grandmother, Betty Ray Forester.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy King, Justin King, Austin Godwin, Adam Cornelius, Mike Moore, and Tom Strawn.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men’s Sunday School Class of Woodmont Baptist Church.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Danny McFall who so lovingly saw to his needs in his many times of sickness and to Drs. Felix Morris and Hisham BaAlbaki. A special thanks to the nurses of CCU, ECM Hospital who treated our family with an overwhelming love.
