Obituary for Neil Mentzer

Neil  Mentzer
Neil Mentzer, 94, of Loveland died on January 18, 2012. He was born March 24, 1917 in Sterling, CO to Clare F. and Edna May (Runyan) Mentzer. Neil went through school in Fort Collins and graduated from Fort Collins High School in 1936. He was a chemistry major at CSU for 1 ½ years. Neil married Frances L. Mckee on July 6, 1942 in Kimble, NE. He entered the Air Force in September 1942 and was honorably discharged December 1945 as a Staff Sergeant. He was a radio operator and mechanic. Neil and Frances had three children, Judy in 1944; Jary in 1946; and Jean in 1948. After the war Neil and Frances moved to Cheyenne, WY where he worked in a photo lab and then an appliance repair shop. In 1966 Neil and his family moved to Longmont where he worked IBM for 23 years and retired from at age 70. The Mentzers moved to Loveland, the day after the big flood on June 30, 1976. Neil was a ham operator; KB0YZJ. He enjoyed many hobbies including painting landscapes, photography, stamp collecting, and playing music. He played violin, guitar, keyboard and Qcord. Neil married Erna Nolte on June 19, 1999 and is survived by her. Also survived are a son Jarold Alan Mentzer and wife Jane of Milliken and a daughter Jean Lenore Young of Plattsburgh, NY, 2 sisters; Dorothy May Hawkins and Eleanor Ruth Huffman and husband Robert of Denver, 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Neil was preceded in death by his wife Frances in 1998 and by a daughter Judy Marie in 2001; and by 2 brothers; Roy E. Mentzer and Lloyd W. Mentzer. Neil was a member of Resurrection Fellowship Church, also a member of FGBMFI. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 21st, 2pm at Allnutt Funeral Service, 2100 N. Lincoln, Loveland, visitation 11-2. Reception to follow in Allnutt’s family center. Memorial contributions in Neil’s honor can be made to your charity of choice in care of Allnutt Funeral Service.
