Obituary for R.L. Armstrong

Funeral service for Mr. R.L. Armstrong, 82, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Laird Funeral Home with Bro. Dock Lazarine officiating. Burial will follow at Redland Cemetery in Douglass, Texas.

Mr. Armstrong passed away on Wednesday October 14, 2009 in Nacogdoches.
R.L. was born on November 1, 1926 in Douglass,Texas the son of the late Henry V. Armstrong and Della Dean (Smith) Armstrong.

R.L. served his country in the US Army and the US Navy in WWII and the Korean War. He was passionate about his country, proudly serving in the armed forces abroad and at home never wavering in his devotion to the United States of America. He was a life member of VFW Post 3893 in Nacogdoches. Past Master of the Swift/Cushing Masonic Lodge, 32 degree Master Mason, Waco Scottish Rite, Sharon and Nacogdoches Shrine and the Eastern Star, Cushing. R. L. had worked as a self employed barber at RL's barber shop that was located on South Street for over 25 years and had been employed with Brown and Root for over 23 years. R.L. loved the outdoors, including fishing, hunting and working his farm and loving his children and grandchildren. Children loved to go get their hair cut by Mr. Armstrong because they knew they would get bubble gum after he finished.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wanda Faye Sowell Armstrong of Nacogdoches; three sons, Timothy L. Armstrong and wife, Kay of Deadwood, Rodger D. Armstrong of Dallas, Texas and Ronald N. Armstrong and wife, Allison of Fort Sill, OK; three sisters, Zera Cagle of Nacogdoches, Francis Hanson of Lufkin and Nelda Lawson and husband, Willard of Alto; two grandsons, Justin Armstrong and Matt Armstrong; one granddaughter, Gwenith Armstrong; two step-grandchildren, Whitney Ross and J.W. Long; one step-great-grandson, Creighton Long; great-grandaughter, Jordan Nicole Armstrong; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Gerald Fayne; sisters, Agnes E. Curbow and Sybil Curbow; brother, Max Armstrong.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Lifecare Hospice, Willowbrook Nursing Center and Dr. Olin Fearing, Dr. Michael Mollett, Dr. Larry Walker and Dr. Brent Campbell.

Pallbearers will be, Scott Stiles, Sonny Sowell, Steve Rector, Adam Smith, Gene Hasley and Lowell Wayne Hanson.

Honorary pallbearers will be, Willard Lawson, Marc Cagle, John Henry Cagle, J.C. Cagle, George Hanson, Ronnie Rector and Wayne Rector.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 16, 2009 from 6-8 pm at Laird Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes that memorial donations be made to the Shriners Hospital Benefit Fund, 10027 State Hwy. 31 E., Tyler, Texas 75705-9891.
